The Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ZIN RAS) is a major scientific institution dedicated to the study of animals and one of the world’s significant zoological organizations. Founded in 1832 as the Zoological Museum of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, it grew from collections established at the Kunstkamera. Today, its fundamental research covers animal systematics, fauna, biogeography, evolution, ecology and behaviour, parasitism, and the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. The institute also works on biological methods, biotechnology, environmental conservation, and the sustainable use of animal and genetic resources.

ZIN RAS maintains one of Russia’s largest zoological collections, with more than 60 million specimens representing approximately 260,000 animal species, as well as the country’s largest zoological library. Its public-facing resources include the Zoological Museum, with exhibitions, virtual tours, guided excursions, and events. The institute publishes scientific journals, books, and specialist series, and offers research projects, scientific services, conferences, educational activities, and digitized collections. These resources support researchers, students, and visitors interested in zoology and biodiversity.
