ZMO

The Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) is a unique research institution in Germany that focuses on interdisciplinary and historically comparative studies of the Middle East, Africa, Eurasia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. At the core of their research is the study of interactions among predominantly Muslim societies and their relationships with neighboring non-Muslim regions. The ZMO conducts research in various areas such as life stages and generations, environment and justice, contested religion and intellectual culture, and cross-cutting themes.

They also engage in exploratory research projects like Timely Histories, which explores the societal history of time in South Asia, and the Historicity of Democracy in the Arab and Muslim Worlds. Additionally, they have completed research projects like the Schulprojekt im Rahmen des Wissenschaftsjahrs 2022 – Nachgefragt! (School Project in the Science Year 2022 - Inquire!) and the Corona Dossier. The ZMO organizes various events, including upcoming lectures and lecture series, and publishes ZMO Studies, ZMO Programmatic Texts, and ZMO Working Papers.
