The Zoomquilt is a collaborative digital art project built around an endlessly looping, infinitely zooming painting. Created in 2004 by project founder Nikolaus Baumgarten, it brings together 15 illustrators, who produced 46 interconnected images. Each scene blends into the next, with the final image returning seamlessly to the first and creating the illusion of an uninterrupted journey through the artwork.
The project grew from early online communities making collaborative patchwork paintings, in which artists adapted their work to the edges of neighboring contributions. Inspired in part by Gridcosm, the Zoomquilt transformed this shared approach into a continuous animated experience. First released in Shockwave and Flash, it has since been adapted for modern web browsers.
The Zoomquilt offers an online viewing experience, a fullscreen mode, a Mac screensaver, and an Android live wallpaper. Its related creative offerings include Zoom Art for Screenings and other zoom-based projects such as Organic City, Infinite Flowers, Arkadia, Hydromeda, and Zoomquilt 2.
