Zwemschool IJburg is a small swimming school in Amsterdam’s IJburg neighborhood, specializing in lessons for children. Its deliberately small classes, limited to eight children, and one-to-one private lessons give each learner personal guidance in a warm pool. The school offers a free 45-minute trial lesson, where children can experience the teaching approach and instructors can assess their starting level.

Lessons combine safety, enjoyment, swimming technique and confidence in the water. Children progress through structured levels, from getting comfortable in the water and learning to float to refining strokes, building endurance and preparing for the Dutch A diploma. Instruction covers techniques including breaststroke, front crawl and backstroke, with water treading and independent swimming skills also included. A flotation suit is used at the beginning of the program, and lessons incorporate games to keep learning engaging.

Instructors adapt to each child’s pace and needs, including anxiety around water or concentration difficulties. Skills are reviewed monthly using a student progress system, and parents receive updates.
