The Global Health Security Index is an independent initiative that assesses and benchmarks countries’ capacity to prepare for epidemics and pandemics. Its global index covers 195 countries, while the Africa Health Security Index provides a focused assessment of preparedness across Africa. Together, these indices offer governments, researchers, funders, international partners, nongovernmental organizations, and the public evidence to understand health security capabilities and identify where action is needed.
The initiative makes its findings accessible through country data, reports, methodologies, and recommendations. Its assessments draw on public data from trusted sources and help users track progress over time, recognize gaps, and inform decisions about investment and collaboration. The Africa index is designed to support leaders in measuring, financing, and advancing improvements, with accountability for progress. The website also shares news and analysis on health security, including links between climate action and preparedness. The indices are produced by the Nuclear Threat Initiative, Brown University School of Public Health Pandemic Center, and Economist Enterprise.
