The Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP) is part of the Clinical Effectiveness workstream within NHS Education for Scotland’s Dental Directorate. It develops user-friendly, evidence-based guidance for dental teams, presenting recommendations and advice in a practical format that can be readily understood and applied. Its work supports the delivery of safe, effective and person-centred care.
SDCEP’s published resources cover topics such as managing acute dental problems, prescribing medicines for dentistry, periodontal care and antibiotic prophylaxis against infective endocarditis. Alongside guidance, the programme provides implementation advice and supporting materials, including practice guides and interactive decision-support tools for dental staff and other healthcare professionals. Its resources are also available through the Dental Companion.
The programme shares updates through its news and dental clinical effectiveness newsletter, and provides information about guidance in development, its working methods, endorsements and partnerships. SDCEP works with other NHS Education for Scotland clinical effectiveness programmes, including TRIADS, the Scottish Dental Practice Based Research Network and the Quality Improvement in Practice Training team.
