Tropical Storm Risk (TSR) is a leading provider of innovative cyclone forecasting and risk assessment services, established in 1998 within University College London's Mullard Space Science Laboratory. Supported by the UK government's TSUNAMI initiative, TSR pioneered methods for predicting seasonal tropical cyclone activity, offering some of the earliest monthly forecasts across the North Atlantic, Australian, and Northwest Pacific regions. Their award-winning Tropical Storm Tracker, launched in 2004, revolutionized storm tracking by forecasting wind fields up to five days ahead and introduced Storm Alert emails for timely updates to communities and humanitarian organizations like Reuters and the UN World Food Programme.
With substantial advancements in 2008, facilitated by Aon Benfield, TSR expanded its suite of products to include sophisticated spatial data, crucial for insurers and government entities in assessing risks. In 2022, operations were transitioned to EuroTempest, which has since enriched TSR’s offerings with Rainfall Accumulation data to address flooding risks and enhanced regional updates in collaboration with international meteorological agencies.
