O Simpósio Nacional de Geomorfologia teve a primeira edição realizada em Uberlândia em 1996, na Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU), Minas Gerais, quando um grupo de geomorfólogos presentes propuseram e fundaram a UGB (União da Geomorfologia Brasileira). A UGB se destina a servir desinteressadamente à coletividade, sem distribuir lucros ou dividendos aos seus componentes ou dirigentes, e tem por objetivo principal congregar todos que no Brasil ou no exterior se dediquem à geomorfologia brasileira e áreas afins. Desde então a UGB promove a cada dois anos, preferencialmente em anos pares, o Simpósio Nacional de Geomorfologia (SINAGEO), para aproximação dos associados e demais interessados com apresentação de trabalhos técnicos e científicos de divulgação dos avanços da Geomorfologia.  As decisões sobre os locais de realização dos simpósios sempre foram tomadas nos eventos anteriores, em Assembleia Geral Ordinária da UGB, por ocasião da realização dos Simpósios Nacionais de Geomorfologia. Na edição realizada na cidade do Crato, no Estado do Ceará, organizado pela Universidade Regional do Cariri (URCA), foram aprovadas as propostas para sediarem os eventos de 2020 e 2022 das Universidades Federais de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) e de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) - Campus do Pantanal, respectivamente.   Ao longo das edições subsequentes aquele encontro inaugural em Uberlândia, o SINAGEO foi se estabelecendo como fórum privilegiado para se debater os rumos, aplicações e perspectivas da pesquisa geomorfológica no Brasil, sendo que a cada nova edição são postos à vista as mais refinadas técnicas de pesquisa e ainda as mais recentes preocupações temáticas, evidenciando o potencial da comunidade científica nacional, refletindo-se, ainda, no crescente número de participantes e trabalhos publicados. Após a edição que foi realizada na Universidade Federal do Cariri em 2018, o 13° SINAGEO deveria ter sido realizado em 2020 no formato presencial na Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. Devido às recomendações dos órgãos competentes nacionais e internacionais acerca da propagação da Covid-19 e em concordância com a diretoria da União da Geomorfologia Brasileira, o 13° SINAGEO foi adiado para o período de 15 a 19 de novembro de 2021 no formato online, a partir de então o evento bianual da UGB passou a acontecer nos anos ímpares. De 24 a 30 de agosto de 2023 foi realizado o 14º SINAGEO em Corumbá, conforme decido em 2020. No evento de online de Juiz de Fora em 2021 ficou decidido por unanimidade que o 15º SINAGEO realizar-se-ia em Natal no ano de 2025
